Maunaantar, a mime theatrical competition, was last held at Bharat Natya Mandir in Pune, providing a welcome variation to the city's theatre scene.
For the sixth year in a row, the competition, which was also one of Pune's first Mime Play festivals, pleased the crowd. Kushal Khot, the festival's organiser, jokes, Maunaantar is the first of its kind theatre festival in Maharashtra because its primary focus is mime.
Miming is a one-of-a-kind and difficult task for an actor. When words aren't available, the actor must rely on actions to let the audience feel the emotions of the drama. It serves as a test for the actor, as it demonstrates how skilled the actor is by relying just on actions rather than speaking. Miming, a kind of acting that incorporates a lot of activity, make-up, and music, can help an actor connect with the audience. “Words are the primary means of communication; one uses words to tell a tale; yet, when words are unavailable, such as in mime, one must rely on expressions and eyes to communicate, which can be difficult to convey to the audience.” said Anagha Kakde, an actor in the play EI Mago.
