RAY: A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEND, NOT A PERFECT ONE THOUGH

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

Ray, the new series on Netflix that have modernized short stories written by Satyajit Ray, the classic and evergreen director. This review will review three out of the four episodes of the Netflix series, Ray.

Bahrupiya

The weakest of all three stories but still with the most interesting character. Bahrupiya stars K K

Menon as an anti-social person that works as a makeup artist and has an affair with a struggling

actress. Indrashish Shah (KK Menon) talks to himself, is not diligent towards work, and grieves about his grandmother that passed away recently. The story starts when his grandmother leaves a book for him, a book that changes his life and give him a chance to turn around his life. The story looks beautiful on paper but the direction is a little bit flawed, the character could have done much more than what he had done in the movie with the opportunity he got. The episode look half-baked, it had so much potential with the character like Indrashish but the story carves a different path for the character. The good thing in the movie is that technically, it is a delight to eyes. The colors make you understand the dull and melancholic life of Indrashish, the background music, the production design and KK Menon himself, KK Menon is a gem, and he proves yet again with Bahrupiya.

Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa

Telling you anything about the movie will hamper your experience, go watch it without knowing

anything, go clueless and you will fall in love with this magical piece of art that Abhishek Chaubey has stitched. The movie stars Manoj Bajpayee and Gajraj Rao, and both of them have made this movie a standout in the series. Basically the movie is about two characters who meet in a train coincidentally but share a dark past. The movie is humorous and lighthearted and unique in its own way, it leaves a smile upon your face. The unique thing about Satayjit Ray’s work is that he makes characters that have a certain characteristic, and the character development will evolve around that characteristic only. Most of the film is shot in a train coach, and still it’s interesting. Manoj Bajpayee and Gajraj Rao shine in this epic film, their chemistry and the dialogues exchanged between them reflects the rich writing. The thing that caught my eye, and of course will move you too, is the production design. It looks so marvelous and grandeur, it teleports you to this world created by Satyajit ray. Don’t miss this one.

Spotlight

Harshvardhan Kapoor, the underdog star kid, his choice of films are far superior than any of the star kid. Harshvardhan Kapoor plays a star kid in this movie who is not that good at acting but is still getting movie offers, he asks himself several times in a movie that who he is, is he really good at what he is doing. He is famous for his one ‘look’ that is a stare that he does on which people go crazy but recently his ‘look’ has vanished too. In all this downfall he meets a mysterious character that changes his life. That’s all spotlight is all about, a funny movie, you will crack up many times watching this. Radhika Madan and Akansha Ranjan embellishes the movie with their acting and leaving their impact on the audience. Radhika Madan is the hidden diamond in this movie that shine whenever she comes on the screen, after Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota this is a compelling performance by her, her movies take you on a cinematic journey that you have never witnessed before.

All in all, go watch Ray, it’s not at all disappointing (maybe a little bit). It has some flaws but if you see it as a whole it takes you on an enjoyable and unique experience of four hours. One more suggestion go read the short stories that are modernized in this series so that you can get to know more about the legend, Satayajit Ray.

My name's Rohan, a film enthusiast, I have been watching films since my childhood, and everytime I enter the hall I am in an awe of the wonderful amalgamation of colours and music, imagination and reality. I am currently pursuing Mass communication from Bennett University, there are many goals in my life but the one that stands on the first place is to be a film director.
