Playwright and director Ratnakar Matkari's 'Aaranyak' is a timeless Marathi classic that encapsulates the lull after the battle of Kurukshetra when Yudhishtir was crowned as the king of Hastinapur and the Kaurvas were annihilated. It poignantly portrays the grief with which the erstwhile king Dhritarashtra, accompanied by his wife Gandhari and his half-brother and advisor Vidur, leaves his past behind to spend the rest of his life in the aaranya, or the forest. Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, decides to join the three and what follows in the wilderness is an exploration of who they really are beyond what they have lost and gained in the war.
The teleplay stars Dilip Prabhavalkar, Ravi Patwardhan, and Pratibha Matkari.
